Burundi is one of the poorest, smallest, and most densely populated nations in Africa. The mainstay of the Burundian economy is agriculture, which supports more than 90% of the labor force, the majority of whom are subsistence farmers. Although Burundi is potentially self-sufficient in food production, the ongoing civil war, overpopulation, and soil erosion have contributed to the contraction of the subsistence economy in recent years. Coffee, Burundi's chief export, accounts for 80% of its foreign exchange income. Cotton, tea, sugar, and hides are also exported. Livestock is raised. The country's industries include food processing, the manufacture of basic consumer goods such as blankets and footwear, assembly of imported components, and public works construction. A large number of Burundi tenders and RFP's float from Educational and Consultancy Services.
